I’ve just found the perfect place to have breakfast or lunch in Durham when I’m feeling like some comfort, home cooking- Puerto Rican style!
Spanglish has just opened up their newest location in Durham, NC and I was invited to pop in for a pre-opening preview of their menu. You may have seen their OG Spanglish food truck on the streets at popular spots or breweries as they serve up house sobao bread, made-to-order empanadas and 12-hour slow roasted pork. Maybe you’ve stopped into their North Raleigh location, Pressed, where they serve up beautifully crafted signature sandwiches.
Now, you’ve got a spot in Durham with an expanded menu to indulge your cravings. Located at 104 City Hall Plaza in the previous Bagel Bar spot across from City Hall, Spanglish serves up elevated Puerto Rican fare in a bright, vibrant atmosphere. A gorgeous wall mural depicts a mixture of Puerto Rican culture and the local “Bull City” icon while fun latin music plays in the background.
The lunch menu includes delicious signature salads and bowls, empanadas, sandwiches,and signature sodas.
Spanglish is owned by two husband and wife teams who wanted to bring Puerto Rican flavors to a new audience while pleasing those that were searching for a taste of home. Since my family is from Argentina, I know a thing or two about empanadas, so I was especially thrilled to savor the flavors of their Beef and Maduros and Abuela’s Chicken empanadas. They did not disappoint.
Owner Elizabeth Gutierrez explained that in their search for authenticity, her husband and another co-owner drive down to Miami every 2-3 months to load up their truck with thousands of empanada shells that aren’t found in this area. I predict that attention to detail and their enthusiasm for sharing a bit of their culture with the Triangle will make Spanglish a surefire hit for anyone looking for a quick, casual, meal in Durham that tastes just like an Abuela’s home cooking (with Southern flare).
